Understanding the basics of offshore wind
Offshore wind can play an important role in bringing cleaner, more reliable, and affordable energy to coastal communities and beyond. A newer technology to the U.S., offshore wind can contribute significantly to meeting our nation’s increasing energy demands while creating American jobs and investing in the domestic supply chain.
How Offshore Wind Energy Works
- 1 Offshore wind turbines capture the wind’s energy and generate electricity through the spinning of the turbine’s blades around a rotor. The rotor then spins a generator that converts the energy to electricity.
- 2 Fixed-bottom foundations secure the wind turbines to the ocean floor. A network of power cables links the wind turbines together and delivers power to the offshore substation.
- 3 The offshore substation, also fixed to the ocean floor, collects and stabilizes the power generated by the turbines, preparing it for transmission to shore.
- 4 Export cables, buried in the seabed, then bring the power to shore.
- 5 The onshore substation prepares the electricity for the grid to ensure clean power can be safely delivered to homes and businesses.
- 6 Clean electricity travels through above ground transmission lines delivering power to customers.
